The Perfect Granada Itinerary — 4 Days of Alhambra, Flamenco & Sierra Nevada

Before we dive in, a quick orientation for those less familiar with this corner of Spain: Granada sits in Andalusia, the sun-soaked southern region of Spain famous for flamenco, whitewashed villages, and centuries of Moorish history. If you're coming from India, there's something oddly familiar waiting for you here! The intricate arches, courtyards, and water features of the Alhambra echo the same Islamic architectural traditions you'll recognise from the Taj Mahal and Mughal-era monuments back home, just with an Andalusian twist. It's history mirroring (rhyming is probably a better word :)) across continents, and it's part of what makes Granada so special.
Last year, during our Andalusia tour, we missed out on Alhambra tickets and decided to skip Granada entirely. Big mistake! So this time, I was determined not to let that happen again. I booked our tickets to the Alhambra well in advance, and Granada is now a central highlight of our trip. And let me tell you, this city has so much more to offer than just the Alhambra!
From its Moorish history to its lively streets and Andalusian traditions, Granada is packed with fascinating sights and experiences. So, if you’re planning a visit, here’s what to expect and how to make the most of your stay.
Getting there
Granada's own airport (GRX) has limited direct connections, so most travelers fly into Málaga (about 1.5 hours away by car or bus) or connect via Madrid or Barcelona. From Amsterdam, that's usually a single layover; from India, expect one or two stops. Either way, the drive or bus ride in through the Andalusian countryside is a beautiful warm-up for what's ahead.

1. Room Mate Leo
This is the hotel to stay at if you want to be right in the middle of all the action. Situated in the city center, just two minutes from Zara and three minutes from the best churros in town, it’s perfect for those who love shopping and food! The hotel also boasts a year-round heated pool and serves breakfast until noon (yes, please!). The rooms are modern and chic, with a comfortable vibe, although a bit small to my liking.
2. Alhambra Palace Hotel
For a luxurious stay, nothing beats the Alhambra Palace Hotel. Overlooking the city and with incredible views of the Alhambra, this hotel offers a blend of Moorish elegance and modern comfort. It’s an iconic place to stay if you’re celebrating something special or just want to treat yourself. However it’s way out of the city center, almost 17 minutes away drive.
3. Palacio de Santa Inés
This charming boutique hotel is located in the historic Albaicín district. With its traditional architecture and cozy atmosphere, it’s ideal for travelers who want to immerse themselves in Granada’s Moorish past.
4. Porcel Alixares

Day 1: Granada Essentials: Parking, Accommodation, Churros, and Exploring the City

We arrived at Granada City center and were immediately taken aback by the vibrant energy and the warm welcome! The city was alive with festivity, and tourists were buzzing around, creating an exciting atmosphere.
Our stay was at the charming Room Mate Leo, conveniently located on a pedestrian street, Calle Campo Verde,1. Note that the hotel entrance isn't accessible by car, so we had to park first before heading to the hotel. As soon as I arrived at the hotel, I made my way straight to the terrace to soak in the spectacular views of Granada. From up there, I had an incredible view of the majestic Alhambra. The city looked absolutely stunning, with its perfect blend of Moorish architecture and a modern vibe. On one side, you had the mountains, and down below, the cobblestone streets were bustling with tourists, adding to the lively atmosphere. It was a sight to behold! So, here's my advice: whether you’re staying at Room Mate Leo, Alhambra Palace Hotel, or any of the other fantastic hotels in the area, make sure to settle in and enjoy the breathtaking views!
3:00 PM - Churros delight at Churreria Alhambra
Once we got settled in, we couldn't resist heading straight to the Churreria next door. What's a churreria, you ask? Well, just take one look at the name, and you'll know it's a paradise for crispy, mouth-watering churros! Churreria Alhambra is a Granada gem, serving up the best churros in town, accompanied by a steaming mug of rich hot chocolate. Even someone like me, who usually avoids sweet treats, couldn't say no to that temptation! And it's not just churros they do right, this spot also serves up some seriously good Tostada con Tomate (bread, usually toasted, spread with ripe blended tomatoes, and drizzled with olive oil), with a variety of toppings. My personal favorite? The one with creamy avocado.
Pro Tip: Free Tapas! You should know that in most bars or restaurants in Granada, particularly the smaller ones, every time you order a drink, you are ordered a free tapas. |
5:00 PM - Walking Tour of Granada
In the evening, we had a walking tour of Granada. We booked this tour via GetYourGuide. It’s the best way to get acquainted with the city’s vibrant streets, hidden alleyways, and historic spots. Two words: Albaycín & Sacromonte.
These two neighborhoods in Granada are pure magic!
Albaycín is a charming, old Moorish quarter with winding streets, whitewashed houses, and views of the Alhambra that will take your breath away. Sacromonte, on the other hand, is famous for its unique cave dwellings and flamenco heritage, the heart of Granada’s gypsy culture. Together, they capture the soul of the city, and there’s no better way to explore than on foot.

Day 2: Alhambra and Flamenco!
12:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Alhambra Palace Tour
The Alhambra is Granada’s crown jewel and a must-see for anyone visiting the city. Start your tour at noon to explore the Nasrid Palaces, Alcazaba Fortress, and the breathtaking Generalife Gardens. The intricate details, the beautiful courtyards, and the sheer grandeur of this palace will leave you in awe. Pro tip: don’t forget to take a moment at the Court of the Lions to soak in the beauty.

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM: Flamenco Dance Performance
What better way to end the day than with a passionate Flamenco show? Granada is famous for its traditional Flamenco performances, and seeing it live is an unforgettable experience. The energy, music, and vibrant costumes will immerse you in the spirit of Andalusia. Most Flamenco performances start around 7:00 PM or 9:00 PM. It’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance, as shows fill up quickly.

Day 3: Caminito del Rey Adventure, Granada Cathedral, and Hammam Relaxation
7:30 AM – 3:00 PM: Day Trip to Caminito del Rey
The next morning, Sidd and I set off on a hiking adventure, leaving the grandparents and kids to relax by the hotel pool. We had planned to visit Caminito del Rey, famously known as the "World's Most Dangerous Walkway." But did it really live up to the hype? 5:00 PM - Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel
Located in the heart of the city, the Granada Cathedral is a stunning example of Spanish Renaissance architecture. The grandeur of its interior will take your breath away, especially the towering columns and intricate details•
Right next to the cathedral, this chapel is the final resting place of Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, two of Spain’s most important historical figures. The Gothic architecture and the rich artwork inside are worth exploring.

A quick note: this was a full day, hiking, cathedral, hammam back-to-back, so if you're planning your own Day 3 around this itinerary, build in a little breathing room rather than stacking everything the way we did.
Day 4: Sierra Nevada
Our trip to the Sierra Nevada from Granada was one of those days that felt both simple and memorable. The drive from Granada took about 45 minutes, winding steadily upwards through changing landscapes until the city gave way to open mountain views and crisp, fresh air. We parked in the main public parking area near the cable car station, which made it easy to explore the area on foot.
Before heading up, we spent some time wandering through the small market below the station. It had a lively, local feel, with stalls selling woollen caps, gloves, scarves, toys, trinkets and handmade souvenirs. We picked up some souvenirs and gifts for friends.
The cable car ride was the highlight of the visit. The tickets cost around €20–€25 per person for a return journey, and as we rose above the slopes, the views opened up in every direction. Looking out over the mountains, I was reminded how quickly perspective changes when we leave behind the familiar and allow ourselves to see things from a different height. There was a stillness in the air, and for a few moments, it felt as though time had slowed.

After coming back down, we had lunch at the restaurant below the cable car station. It was more than just a meal; it was a chance to sit quietly, enjoy the mountain atmosphere and let the experience settle in.

I never expected Granada to be so grand. It truly is the heart of Andalusia, so effortlessly majestic. From the timeless beauty of the Alhambra to the breathtaking Sierra Nevada just a short drive away, every experience felt unique and memorable.
